Follow Friday Feature

Today I'm participating in a blog hop. It's been a while since I did one, so I thought, as I'm not at work today and have a bit of time, I'd give this great, book related hop another go. It's chock full of book enthusiastic bloggers so what could be better? Full rules for the hop are on Parajunkees blog and is co-hosted by Alison Can Read. Featured blogger this week is Book'd Out.

The hop always involves a question. This weeks question is;

Q: Which book genre do you avoid at all costs and why?

This year I'm attempting to widen my reading choices and try books I wouldn't normally pick up, so this question is a  bit at odds with that plan, but one that I don't think I'll be able to get my head around is dystopian. I'm not sure I could say why particularly. I think it's the doom and gloom and grimness that is portrayed throughout. Even if there is a triumph at the end, the whole imagery of the idea just sets me off running in the opposite direction. You probably think that strange as I write crime, murder, but it's set in reality and in reality the cops go home to places you and I are familiar with. There is a sense of reality and calm in there somewhere and that's what I like. It's all choices I know.

I hope you join in with this hop. Welcome to any new followers who pop by. It really is great to have you here and I hope to see you again.

Now time to go hopping!

  1. At first, I tried to avoid dystopian because they're darker. I read a dystopian by Kailin Gow that I loved.

  2. Does this mean you haven't read the Hunger Games? I only ask because of the buzz it's had. I just wonder if that might influence you in any way to try it?

  3. Amy - Thanks for stopping by. I'm on my way over to you now!

Sarah - I really haven't read it. The hype around it also puts me off even more. It just sounds so grim... Have you read it? What were your thoughts?

  8. I hadn't heard of this hop before but I'm going to have to try it sometime, it sounds like fun.

I'm trying too to read genres I normally don't read in an attempt to expand my horizons, and I've been pleasantly surprised to find I enjoy sci-fi when I always thought I wouldn't. But I really can't get into most romance novels. I seem to just want to read dark stories, which probably says something about me that isn't good LOL.

    Have a great weekend!

  14. New follower! Lol, dystopian is probably my all time fave to read, however I can understand what you mean about the gloom...when I describe it to people I think to myself "wow, that sounds depressing!" but I like it anyway :) here is my FF if you'd like to follow back: http://theonceandfuturelibrarian.blogspot.com/2012/01/follow-friday-4.html

  15. Julie - It is fun Julie. I don't think I could keep up something this size every week, but it's nice to pop my head in every so often. Have a lovely weekend.

Shantal - I'm not a horror reader either! Thanks for stopping by.

Library snake - Thanks for stopping by and following!

Angela - That's the great thing about books, there is something for everyone. Thank you for stopping by.

J.B - Thank you! It's a good job there are enough books out there to keep us all happy. It's what's so good about reading isn't it.

    Shelleyrae - We're a diverse bunch us reader aren't we :)

Kary - Thanks for following! Reading is escapism into the unknown and we all do that differently. There is a lot to keep us all happy. In fact I don't think I will ever come close to getting through my TBR pile.

  16. I had to look up Dystopia just to check what you mean by the genre, (should I be admitting that lol!) and in the list it gave, I've read The End of Mr Y (Scarlet Thomas), and Gridlock (Ben Elton). The Running Man comes under it too... and I've watched that.

So this isn't a genre I would avoid, lol!

I'm trying to read opening any genre, although I write in 'romance'. I just avoid Stephen King type books. I'm worried he'd scare the hell out of me through the pages... as the films do.

  17. ...although now looking again, The Running Man was written by Stephen King lol! I only watched it years ago as me and my brother were going through a must watch every Arnie film going lol!

  19. I read a lot of sf, and it's not uncommon to find dystopian themes in there. And it's now common in the YA section.

I don't actively avoid certain genres, i'm just drawn to others more than the rest. If anything, I'd have to say westerns. I tried reading one, because I never had, and couldn't even finish the second chapter XD
